On the borders of Champagne and Brie

The Les Essarts project in the Marne region is part of the Des Hommes et Des Arbres initiative to "Support and finance tree experiments and improvments".

Forest in the heart of the Marne

Project area

8.24 ha

Initial state

Simple coppice of very young birch, aspen and black alder. Old trace of a post-storm 1999 plantation of Sycamore Maple and Oak that was not maintained by the previous owner and led to failure.

Purpose

Conversion to irregular hardwoods. Work with what already exists, whatever the species, favoring quality and vigor, and enrich to diversify.

Project location

Les Essarts-lès-Sézanne

Marne (51)

Work to be carried out
  • Enrichment planting
  • Recruitment of natural regeneration
  • Designation of habitat trees
  • Opening passages to limit settlement
  • Conservation of species diversity
  • Monitoring by the Forest Manager
Sustainable management

Plan Simple de Gestion, application of continuous cover silviculture.

Project description

Audited benefits

The Ecosystem services valuation procedure will make it possible to audit and verify the results indicators associated with management measures and the benefits attached to them. The specific benefits concerned are the preservation of biodiversity and soil conservation.

All these elements have been audited 5 years after the start of the project.

Restoring biodiversity

Restoring biodiversity

Soil preservation

Soil preservation

Performance indicators
  • Maintenance of a minimum of 5 tree species
  • Designation of young trees: 25/ha (natural regeneration)
  • Planting at least 80 enrichment trees
  • 2 habitat trees / ha désignated
  • 1800 m of partitions (pathways) with staggered approach
Direc benefits generated
  • Conservation of diversity and forest cover
  • Renewal and intra-specific diversity
  • Species diversification
  • Micro-habitats in trees for wildlife
  • Limiting soil compaction and preserving the landscape
Valuing ecosystem services

Benefits for contributors

Quantified Ecosystem Services
  • Valuation of two Ecosystem Services : Biodiversity + Soil
  • Choice of surface area to be financed by the contributor
  • Quantified indicators to highlight
Credibilitty and transparency
  • A project implemented in a forest managed using irregular forestry methods
  • Monitoring with quantifiable measurements by an independent auditor
  • Indicators and verification procedures are defined in advance in accordance with our methodology, which is sent to the contributor
Sustainable Development Goals

The Project's 2 Ecosystem Services and associated management measures directly address 4 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Life on Earth (15), Responsible Consumption and Production (12), Action on Climate Change (13), Decent Work and Economic Growth (8).

CSR Communication

The contribution to the Project can be associated with any CSR/marketing communication :

  • Extra-financial reporting
  • Mention  of Ecosystem Services as part of a CSR policy or promotional compaign
  • Organize a visit to the Project highlighting Ecosystem Services (see proposed conditions)
Sustainable Development Goals UN

On the basis of the management measures and the benefits generated, we were able to define 4 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) directly concerned by the Project :

Diversity of tree species, wildlife habitats, preserved soil life, regeneration

Adaptation to climate change, irregular high forest with maintenance of standing CO2 stock and preservation of CO2 in the soil

Sustainable forest management with conversion to irregular high forest (continuous cover), favouring quality woods

Well-paid, rewarding work for forestry contractors and forest managers
